I'll be Home for Christmas

2005/12/18 Originally published in the Vernon Morning Star.

As this article arrives on your doorstep this morning, it finds most of you preparing to dash out the door to take on the arduous task of completing your Christmas shopping. It seems that whether it's food or gifts, there is always something last minute to buy.

You've been busy preparing and attending holiday parties and socials, "amidst all the hustle", as the Christmas carol "Silver Bells" relays. But, most of all, you've been doing all you can to create the perfect Christmas Day. You're looking forward to family and friends getting together and being happy and being at home.

This is the time of year that we enjoy our homes the most. They are our gathering point. They are where we want to be on this special day. We fuss over the decorations. We hang lights outside to make our homes shiny, bright and beautiful and to make our entire neighbourhoods glisten. We pay careful attention to our living rooms. Our thoughtfully decorated tree is placed so that it is the focal point in the room. We decorate our fireplace mantles and on Christmas Eve we hang our festive Christmas stockings. We work hard to put out the perfect Christmas dinner and to buy or prepare all the sweets and treats we love. So much tradition! Isn't it funny how Christmas dinner is the one meal of the year we are supposed to prepare the way it's always been, without improvement or embellishment? That's because Christmas is always about fond memories of years past and we try our utmost to recreate those special memories every year.

Our Christmas preparations are all about our homes and our families. Christmastime is the epitome of why we buy homes. We want them to be our own. We want them to be a foundation on which we build family life, and to be the place where family and friends come to enjoy and appreciate the company of each other. Many realtors say people buy homes, not houses, and it's true.

So, carry on with the dozens of little tasks that will result in your Christmas being special. Enjoy decorating your homes and fussing over the people you love. Amidst all these preparations please take time to remember the true meaning of Christmas.

I sincerely hope that your holidays will be the happiest they can be and that you'll find yourself celebrating at your home or that of a family member or good friend and creating new fond memories.

Merry Christmas to all!
